A naturalist, raptor specialist, tracker, mountain lion researcher, educator, wildlife author and gifted photographer, Zach truly embodied the role of Earth Steward. He was a dedicated volunteer Field Rescuer and Raptor Handler at BRC. Those who knew him remember his humor, ready smile, contagious enthusiasm, and love for our resident Raptor Ambassadors. To quote the lovely obituary in the Healdsburg Tribune, “Hiking, camping, biking, yoga, meditation, music, and Penn State sports were his hobbies, but his passion was clear to all who knew him: stewardship of the earth by helping people appreciate and live in greater harmony with the natural world. His gentle nature, sense of humor, deep connection to people and his love for animals will be missed by all who knew him.” Zach was a talented photographer, and many of his images and naturalist work live on through his blog feralzach.com.
Over $12,000 of donations in Zach’s memory have enabled the purchase of essential diagnostic and other equipment for our Rehab Hospital. It is with great appreciation that we dedicate the Zachary Elias Dautrich Medical Laboratory to our friend, and to Zach’s friends and family for making this possible! The formal dedication was held at The Bird Rescue Center on Friday, August 4, 2018.
A born educator, before Zach passed away in March 2017 he requested that memorial contributions support our work educating the public. The Zach Dautrich Resident Raptor Fund will provide ongoing care for the Center’s 18 unreleasable Raptor Ambassadors.
If you were fortunate enough to know Zach, or feel inspired by his life, please consider making a donation in his memory.
