Building Our Future – Land, Leases and a Capital Campaign

On April 5 2019, BRC signed a long-term lease, culminating a 4-year search for a new home. After investigating almost 20 different properties, we have reached a major milestone in our relocation effort.

Since learning of the County’s plans to sell the property we currently occupy for much-needed affordable housing, we have been on a quest to find a new home.

J. Nichols, Board Chair and Benefactor Heidi Jacquin sign a long-term lease agreement.

Last year, we met an amazing couple, Heidi and Dave Jacquin. They believe in our mission and are dedicated to our plans for creating a new, state-of-the-art facility.

On April 5, 2019, we signed a long-term lease on land they own. The Jacquins also introduced us to their architect who, along with another local architect, has donated his services to design our new center.

They continue to display their generosity in so many ways: committing to paying our utilities once our new center is finished, covering the costs for ground prep, and for other pre-construction requirements. Most of all, their unwavering dedication to see this project through has resulted in our ability to successfully launch our capital campaign – Invest In The Skies!

And now the real work begins.

To date, we have received over $3.5 million in donations, grants, in-kind gifts and services. We have another $3 million to raise in order to complete construction on a brand new, state-of-the-art avian hospital, an interactive educational center and new aviaries for our patients and education birds. This will also include bird-friendly gardens and greenhouses to supply enrichment plants and flowers for our birds.

Your donations will help ensure that the 3,000+ birds we handle each and every year continue to get the best possible care. You will also be supporting our 16 Resident Ambassador birds and our Community Education programs, which reach tens of thousands of children and adults each year with important lessons about climate change, our local environment, and cohabiting with native wild birds. We have one of the few Junior Volunteer programs in the County, and your financial support can help make sure that resource remains available to children between the ages of 13 and 18.

You can make this dream come true

In addition to financial support, we are looking for partners with experience and skills in the construction industry, sources for building materials, appliances, cabinets and countertops, and all of the other things that will be necessary to complete our new hospital and education facilities. We love donations, but also greatly appreciate discounts!

Local architects Ken Coker and Daniel J. Strening are donating their talents for the design of our new Center. In addition, we have received offers for engineering, concrete work, and for door locks and closures. If you are in a position to help us (or know someone who might!) — please let us know.
